This popularity has made the river a thriving tourist destination. We searched accommodations along the Kinabatangan River to find the perfect stay. Something away from the throngs of tourist boats competing to see wildlife. Thanks to a tip from a guest, we discovered TaBu, a hidden gem in the jungle.

Located far up the river from the teeming tourist area, TaBu is the only encampment on an oxbow lake formed by the river. TaBu was originally a remote government survey and research station. The facilities are clean, well-maintained, and basic. It is an authentic open-air camp experience, with a communal sleeping area, shared bathrooms, and a shared dining area. Unlike other accommodations that require a river cruise to discover jungle life, TaBu is surrounded by jungle life, existing in harmony with nature. Orangutans and a variety of monkeys live in trees surrounding the camp. Elephants are occasional visitors. A wild civet cat is a local resident.

TaBu's remote location, peaceful jungle treks and secluded river cruises all but ensure visitors will see Borneo's Big 5: orangutans, pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, hornbills and crocodiles. Local guides will show you other rainforest life you never imagined.
